FDRIO is pleased to announce a successful, member-driven advocacy initiative which resulted in amendments to the Family Law Act that strengthen the enforcement of family arbitration awards for child and spousal support. FDRIO’s submission was based on the hard work of its volunteer committee, chaired by Brahm Siegel, and including Lorne Wolfson, Cheryl Goldhart, Elizabeth Hyde, and Clayton Spencer. The amendments to Section 59.9 of the Family Law Act will come into force on May 1, 2026. The amendment allows qualifying arbitration awards to be filed with the court and enforced as court orders, supporting faster and more effective outcomes for Ontario families. This achievement highlights the impact of informed, practitioner-led advocacy and the value of member engagement.
